Scheduled speakers:

Stephen E. Hefling (Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio).
Professor Hefling is a leading Mahler scholar in the United States. The title of his talk will be "'
Accende lumen sensibus': A Great Bearer of Joy, A Gift to the Nation”.

Jane K. Brown (University of Washington, Seattle).
Professor Brown's book, Goethe's Faust: a German Tragedy (Cornell University Press) is a substantial contribution to Goethe studies.
The title of her talk will be “Ever Onward: Goethe’s Faust around 1900”.

Robert Olson (Artistic Director of the MahlerFest). The title of his talk will be “A Conductor’s Perspective on Mahler’s Eighth Symphony”.

Marilyn L. McCoy (Visiting Professor, Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts).
The title of Dr. McCoy's talk at the Symposium will be “Coaxing the Universe to Resound and Ring: A Look at Some Climactic Moments from Mahler’s Eighth Symphony”.

In addition to speaking at the Symposium Dr. McCoy will also present the pre-concert lectures before each performance of Mahler's Eighth Symphony: at 6:30pm on Saturday, May 16, and again at 2:30pm on Sunday May 17, both pre-concert talks occurring in Macky Auditorium. The title of these pre-concert talks will be “Barnum and Bailey Circus—or the Music of the Spheres? Chaos versus Divine Order in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony”.
