Ann Schmiesing, Assistant Professor of German and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, received her doctorate in German literature from Cambridge University in 1996. Her research interests include Norwegian literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and German Enlightenment drama and moral philosophy. Having recently completed a book manuscript on the German dramatist and critic Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, she is currently writing a history of the Norwegian theater in the nineteenth century. Prof. Schmiesing delivered an intriguing lecture on the background of the fold poems, Des Knaben Wunderhorn, at MahlerFest XIV.

Prof. Schmiesing will illuminate the poetry and other works of the German author Friedrich Rückert, whose poems touched Mahler so deeply that he set Kindertotenlieder and five other individual poems to music. Prof. Schmiesing's talk on the literary milieu of Des Knaben Wunderhorn received enthusiastic response at MahlerFest XIV.
