Twenty Mahler scholars will present talks on a wide variety of topics during this symposium, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, 15 January through Saturday 17 January. When the titles to the talks have been confirmed, a full program will replace this page.
Prepare to come to MahlerFest XI and hear such eminent scholars as Prof. Alessandra Comini, SMU, present a paper on the art of turn-of-the-century Vienna, and Alma Mahler. Prof. Robert Bailey, NYU, Zoltan Roman, Calgary University, and several other lecturers will speak on Das Lied, including a discussion of the Chinese texts and their meanings. Prof. Stephen Hefling, Case Western Reserve U. will discuss the role of programs in Mahler’s music. Henry-Louis de La Grange, Bioblioteque Gustav Mahler, Paris, will outline what new ideas and techniques Mahler brought to opera conducting, production, and coaching of singers not only to sing but to act. Zoltan Roman will also speak on the First Symphony and Prof. Edward Reilly, Vassar, will discourse on Mahler’s manuscripts and what can be learned from them.
Gilbert Kaplan, of Mahler II fame, will lead an audience participation session on "Everything you always wanted to know about Mahler but didn’t know whom to ask. Our twenty experts will be able to answer just about any question you have always wanted to ask.
Some Alma Mahler songs will be presented in the session on Alma Mahler. Prof. Hefling, the discoverer of the piano version of Mahler’s Das Lied, will give some introductory remarks and then Patrick Mason will sing Der Abschied in its original piano voice/version.
There will also be many other illuminating talks on various aspects of Mahler and some of the Mahler family will also be present at the Symposium.
