Mahler, Piano Quartet in A minor, movement, the earliest extant
work of the young Mahler. Played by a group of local musicians,
including Marc Heeg, piano; Judith Glyde, cello; Erika Eckert,
viola; and a violinist to be named soon.
Other piano quartets and quintets, including the quintet which
won a prize at the Vienna Conservatory, have not survived. Mahler
started many works but never finished most of them, explaining
to his friend and confidante at the Conservatory Natalie Bauer-Lechner,
that he always found himself attracted to a newer style before
finishing a work. The Piano Quartet is very Brahmsian in its
nature, but with hints of what Mahler would become.
Schoenberg, Opus 19 # 6, piano piece composed at Mahler's funeral,
Marc Heeg, piano.
Songs of Bruno Walter, Felix Weingartner, and Alexander Zemlinsky, Mahler's contemporary conductors who conducted Mahler's works as well as composed. Mahler's late champion, Leonard Bernstein, will also be represented.
Patrick Mason, baritone, and Terese Stewart, piano.
